A lunchtime hideout near the Financial District, Sam Lagrassa’s is a take-out deli that claims to have the “No. 1 sandwiches in the world.” However, the moniker should be “largest sandwiches in the world.” Their larger-than-life Reuben and hot pastrami sandwiches are to die for and their deli meats and cheeses are top quality. Sam Lagrassa’s is definitely a carnivore’s dream.

Grass roots deli has the freshest and tastiest deli meats. They sell gourmet food, and you can get all kinds of deli meat to make sandwiches for a yummy picnic or event out. John, the sandwich maker has had a following in the financial district for years. Many people followed him from deli to deli..1 of the first real roasted turkey sandwiches instead of pressed roll. Unfortunately, the change in ownership a few years ago brought the quality down...and a general skimpiness on sandwiches.

Excellent basic daily specials such as pot roast, baked schrod, mac and cheese. Good comfort food place.

Breakfast here is spectacular. You cannot go wrong with either a bacon egg and chees on a hard roll or their "Early Bird Wrap". Hash browns and homefries also are high on my list. As for lunch, the Ruben and the Pulled pork sandwich, a special on tuesdays and thursdays are both terrific choices. The service here is far better than you would find in eatery's that you would pay twice as much to eat. Great people, Great food, great service. you owe it to yourself to try this place. Its hard to find but once you do you will not forget how to get there.

J.Pace & Sons (it is to be pronounced Pah-chay) is well known for its lasagna as well as its sandwiches. Inside, it's hardly any different from your normal sandwich shop. Hot sandwiches over there, cold over here, pay down there, next to the drink fridge. I usually head for their "Big Dig" sandwich, being prosciutto, basil, fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, roasted red peppers, oil and balsamic vinegar on a hefty Italian roll. It's one of their most expensive at $7.45, but after having one, you rarely need dinner. Very filling. The pastries aren't to rave about, but everything else is delish!

UPDATE: The Carving Station, a busy lunch spot on the corner of Tremont and Beacon Streets near Government Center, closed in early 2009. The location will be transformed into a Pressed Sandwiches shop. Like meat? The Carving Station is your place. Don't let the larger-than-life knife above the entrance deter you from this haven for carnivores. This lunch hotspot near Government Center offers a killer selection of slow-roasted meats, home-style cooking and top-shelf sandwiches. The décor is playful with drawn-up menu boards, carving knife decorations and little pigs peeking out from the walls. The only caveat? Carving Station closes shop at 4 p.m. weekdays, so you better get your meat on while you can.

Chopped designer salads? You bet. This Financial Street gem is a hidden hotspot for herbivores looking to satisfy their salad-as-a-meal fix. Hidden behind a grand glass facade at 100 Federal Street, Boston's Wild Greens boasts Wolfgang Puck goodies ranging from robustly prepared soups to vegan-approved salads. Wild Greens also has daily specials--like an awe-inspiring fajita bar on Thursdays and a daily breakfast menu where the chef prepares a larger-than-usual meal as you wait. While a bit on the pricey side, Wild Greens doesn't hold back with its portions (be prepared to walk back to your office with a doggie bag). And, to top off an above-average lunch experience, Wild Greens boasts outdoor seating next to a sculpture garden. Score!
