The Black Rose is where it all happens. Week night or weekend nights, the ambiance is always grand. Expect an awesomely varied crowd, which almost always includes a fair amount of tourists, especially during the day.
t's free during the week, but don't be surprised to pay a cover charge on Fridays and Saturdays, when crowds are much larger.

Looking for a blast from Boston’s Colonial past? The Blackstone Grill will not let you down. The building was built in 1822--the same year that Boston became a city. This Federal-style building was based on the designs of Charles Bulfinch (1763 - 1844), who is most famous for his design of the new State House (1798) and the Faneuil Hall Expansion (1806). Currently, The Blackstone Grill transports its patrons back to the early 1800s serving fresh seafood and beef, along with other local favorites like their excellent clam chowder ($4.95 a bowl) and their Maine lobster roll (lobster meat served on a hot-dog roll, price fluctuates based on the market).

This Faneuil Hall haunt is a dive, but that’s OK if you’re looking for a no-frills alternative to the swanky eateries and nightspots littering this tourist friendly area. With a good selection of brews and a decent offering of pub grub, the Ames Plow Tavern is a throwback to the old-time bars of Boston’s past.

“Everybody knows your name,” but nobody knows how to tell the tourists that this overpriced restaurant-cum-souvenir-shop is a waste of their time and money. Savor the cheesy atmosphere, because the food leaves a bit to be desired—unless you're searching for your average, greasy bar food at slightly inflated prices (burgers and sandwiches $9-13; Giant Norm Burger $15). Extensive beer (12 drafts, pints $5) and mixed drink selection. Entrees $7-18.

Boston is known for its stellar Irish pubs and Hennessy’s of Boston doesn’t disappoint. The décor is chock full of antique furniture and stained-glass windows which gives its patrons a sneak peek of what life was like in 1900s. This popular Faneuil Hall bar combines Boston’s old-school Colonial ambience with an upbeat Irish cheer. Spread out over two floors the bar features a selection of rare Irish whiskeys (Bushmills, Redbreast and Midleton) and an excellent selection of pub grub staples ranging from clam chowder to deli sandwiches.

Mr. Dooley's is a great Irish pub with lots of old-school color. In fact, portraits of notable Irishmen (including Mr. Dooley) peer down from dark green walls, onto patrons crammed into tiny tables and high-backed wooden booths. And the typical pub fare (burgers, shepherd's pie, fish and chips) and thick pints of Guinness are served up with a warm smile from a staff of Irish expatriates. Live music most nights. A regular winner of various "Best of Boston" polls for "Best Irish Bar".

Located in Boston's Financial District, An Tain is a restaurant and bar that transforms into a loud, funky dance club later in the night. It is trendier and more sophisticated than its neighbors Jose McIntyre's, Coogan's and the Purple Shamrock. As the evening carries on, more music and dancing become a bigger factor at An Tain. Another Pro DJ (David Natola) comes to play a stirring mix of hip hop, modern techno, house and dance music that sends the energy through the rafters. Those who are hip hop lovers! you should not miss Saturday nights here. A line begins early as DJ Steve Aprilli shows how it is done the right way. The proprietor is onsite everyday which makes for a well run, and comfortable atmosphere for everyone. That An Tain can successfully be a dining room, bar and dance club in such a small space makes it a venue worth checking out again and again.
Tip: The "No Yankee hats" rule, posted prominently above the bar, is indeed enforced--especially during Sox-Yanks games. Wear at your own risk.
