Opened in 2004, the Hotel Commonwealth represents a large scale "boutique" hotel. It presents service on the level of a small, intimate hotel but in a much larger setting and prides itself on being independent. It includes 3 restaurants: Great Bay, Eastern Standard and The Foundation Lounge as well as an arcade of shops that guests can peruse.
The developers knocked down a row of existing buildings in order to build the hotel, but worked with the City, so a new entrance/handicap accessible elevator for the Kenmore Square T stop was incorporated into the design of the hotel.

The had a TV and radio station in this building through the 1960s. In the 1940s part of the hotel was taken over by the military and then for a while it was a college dorm.
