Opened in 2004, the Hotel Commonwealth represents a large scale "boutique" hotel. It presents service on the level of a small, intimate hotel but in a much larger setting and prides itself on being independent. It includes 3 restaurants: Great Bay, Eastern Standard and The Foundation Lounge as well as an arcade of shops that guests can peruse.
The developers knocked down a row of existing buildings in order to build the hotel, but worked with the City, so a new entrance/handicap accessible elevator for the Kenmore Square T stop was incorporated into the design of the hotel.

Hotel Buckminster dates to the early years of Kenmore Square being created (1897) and the architect of this building was Stanford White (of the girl on the red velvet swing fame). There are 200 rooms in this hotel - which was restored in the 1990s after suffering its way through the 1980s.

The hotel was the site of the first network radio broadcast. In 1929 WNAC Radio had its studios on the upper floors (we know it as WRKO today). The had a TV and radio station in this building through the 1960s. In the 1940s part of the hotel was taken over by the military and then for a while it was a college dorm.

The newly refurbished Charlesgate Hotel in the Back Bay is Boston's version of NYC's The Dakota (location for the film "Rosemary's Baby" and the spot where John Lennon was murdered). This creepy building is a hotbed of alleged paranormal activity since it was original built in 1891 (supposedly by mafiosos). Formerly a Boston University and Emerson College dorm, the site is the source of a slew of reports from students (from the '70s to the mid-'90s) claiming the building is haunted. The Charlesgate Hotel (coupled with The Barnes Mansion) is now an upscale condo building. Read more about the history of the Charlesgate Hotel here.
