The MGH Emergency Department is a full-service, state-of-the-art facility, caring for approximately 76,000 patients per year, with 25 percent of patients admitted to the hospital. It is a Level I Trauma Center, a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center and a Level I Burn Center – the only hospital in the US to hold all three designations simultaneously.

The Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) at MassGeneral Hospital for Children is a distinct child- and family-friendly unit within the general Emergency Department at Massachusetts General Hospital. The Pediatric Emergency Department is staffed twenty-four hours a day by physicians board-certified in pediatric emergency medicine or emergency medicine, pediatric residents, and emergency and pediatric nurses.
As part of MassGeneral Hospital for Children, Pediatric Emergency Department physicians have access to specialists in virtually every specialty and subspecialty of medicine and surgery, including psychiatry, critical care medicine, and trauma services.

The Boston Emergency Services Team, under the leadership of Boston Medical Center and with the support of the Massachusetts Behavioral Health Partnership and the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, provides 24-hour service for adults and children in need of immediate psychiatric intervention. Individuals who need emergency care are assessed and briefly treated by experienced, master’s level clinicians and physicians who specialize in rapid response to those in psychiatric crisis. B.E.S.T. provides a comprehensive, highly integrated system of crisis evaluation to children, adolescents, adults, including the elderly, the homeless, mentally ill and the multi-cultural populations within the Metro Boston areas.
