French Connection's allegedly “casual Euro” clothing is like the Gap, but all grown up, imported, and emblazoned with pseudo-profanity (FCUK?). Duds for work and play include bright as well as classic colors and patterns, and fabrics ranging from cotton to cashmere. The sleek, urban-yet-cute lines come with $50-100+ pricetags, save for a few basic tees going for $20-30. The much smaller men's collection is less colorful and tends more toward the casual (shirts $50-60). Also at Boston:Copley Mall.

Replacing Armani Cafe, Zara is a women's and men's fashion store that officially opened its doors in March 2008. Specializing in European-style clothing and footwear, the new Zara store on Newbury Street is basically an upscale H&M. Famous for its flagship stores in Montreal, Italy and NYC (see the YouTube video below for more info), the Back Bay store has three levels (two floors dedicated to women's clothing, one for men with a stylish kids section on the second floor).

Although the store is hardly crowded, its a head scratcher to why there is the beefed up security at Intermix. There is a always a security guard at the door to keep an eye on the inventory. To it's defense, Intermix does have pricey uber-trendsetting clothing.

While always fun, Betsey Johnson's designs are best in small doses, which is good because that's all you're going to get here. The store is tiny, and carries a small selection of funky sweaters, sexy tops, skinny pants, and flashy skirts. The majority of the inventory, however, consists of lacy, floral, skimpy, or simply pretty dresses ($150+). Although pricey, they can be a nice splurge, especially as it's likely no one else will be wearing the same one at the Freshman Formal. Look for significantly discounted items on the sale rack in the back. This section contains information from Harvard Student Agencies' Unofficial Guide to Life at Harvard.

Prom dresses, wedding dresses, and bridal party gowns. Jessica McClintoc's key looks are often formed dresses, with solid colors and small individual details. The dresses flatter all figures, and are often pretty reasonable for dress-up.

Get your plain shirts, wardrope staples, and classic looks at the Gap. Check out the styles, as they are often seasonal. Vibrant colors in the winter, and charcoals and black in the fall, and spring they mix it up! If you like something, wait for it to go on sale. It will go on sale, and they'll be enough to go around. The sale price is often significantly cheaper and always worth it.

Recently opened in early June 2008, the funky jeans made popular by Fergie's "My Hump" song are now on their way to Newbury. The jeans are characterized by the distinctive back-pockets (most designer jean buffs know jeans by the design on the back pocket) and the outter seam twisting forward to the front of the pant. The jeans flatter most figures- letting you have curves in all the right places. The jeans will cost you a heafty $150 and up. Apart from the well known jeans, the store will carry men, women and children's clothing lines, sportswear, headware, and handbags.
