Bistro-style dining at its best. Rustic Kitchen’s wood burning oven produces exquisite gourmet pizzas that are thin and topped with creative toppings (like the Frutti di Mare and the Italian sausage and roasted pepper pizza). The décor is theatrical (which is appropriate because of its Theatre District locale) and oddly comfy. And their killer wine bar makes one feel like their dining at an exclusive Mediterranean chateau.

On par with upscale chains like Legal Seafood and P. F. Chang's, red and brassy Maggiano's comes without the intimacy and personality of North End restaurants, but it routinely draws throngs seeking its enormous portions of delicious southern Italian food. Groups of 4 can choose a 5-course feast from the “family style menu” for a bargain at $20 each, but a mere half-portion of a single entree like linguine with chicken and pesto (half $12/full $15) will undoubtedly leave leftovers. Other great options include Tuscan-style mussels ($7/$11), homemade gnocchi in tomato vodka sauce ($12/$15), and baked shrimp organata ($23). Weekly specials on Th. Reservations highly recommended.

Restaurateur Rande Gerber (aka Mr. Cindy Crawford) launched Whiskey Park in an attempt to bring the hipster New York scene up east to Boston, with dim lighting, swanky leather couches, mohair pillows, and incense candles. The Park is packed with a diverse but definitely upscale crowd, everyone from older local businessmen to Euro jet-setters—clearly people who don't mind shelling out $7-12 for mixed drinks (although they do have a great martini menu). Dress to impress. Draft beer $5. Th Latin night. Limited pub menu served until 10pm.

One of the 4 nightclubs to make up the Roxy Complex, the Matrix features a retro interior with a cyber edge (a.k.a. green laser lighting). The resulting flashy techno scene would make the nerdy Wachowski brothers feel comfortably at ease, if only it were devoid of human life forms as well. But don't look for the likes of Neo or Trinity here—considering Matrix's predominantly unpretentious college-aged clientele, you'd be better off flaunting your new Versace leather pants at Caprice (also part of the whole Roxy package). Music tends to be top-40, with a little disco, house, and latin (Sa) added to the mix. Cover $5-10, which grants you access to all 4 clubs (Matrix, Roxy, Caprice, and Encore).

Flash's is a neighborhood bar at the crossroads of the South End and Back Bay. Expect to find regular folks from the area and plenty of those that work nearby. The basic idea is 'flashback" cocktails from the 1920's and 1930's coupled with diner-style food. American style food at reasonable prices with cocktails: what's not to like?
Windows are open to Columbus Ave and Stuart Street in the summer so even while there is no 'outdoor area', Flash's has an open-air feeling.
Great place for a TGIF drink with your co-workers...Flash's is also a regular stop for the Povo team!

The Roxy may once have been the haunt of the well-heeled college crowd. Those days, if ever they existed, are now over. Hordes of post-college men and women throng the outfit on weekends to groove to surprisingly monotonous house and techno music. Most of them are desperate for social contact, almost frighteningly so. If you still insist on rocking with the has-beens, remember that jeans will make you stick out like a sore thumb. The Roxy attempts College Nights on F, and the average age of the crowd may drop a couple of years, but the drinks are still expensive ($8 for a standard mixer) and the cover is steep ($15-20, check website for specials). The website lists a schedule of occasional live concerts.

The Roxy is the main location of the Boston Marathon® Post-race Dance Party. Features dancing at a number of Boston's nightclubs and video highlights of the race.
