Bookshops like Brattle are what old Boston is all about. The 3 floors of used and out-of-print books ranges from $1-5 finds on the outdoor sales cart to rare, centuries-old, leather-bound volumes. For the real treasures, wind your way up the narrow staircase to the high-security third floor where the hyper-peppy sales staff will gladly let you explore the store's rarest and priciest collections ($1000+). Check out the Life magazines ($20) on the wall dating from the 40s, 50s and 60s. Used books bought for 25-33% of what the shop's selling price.

Don’t judge a book by its cover. Commonwealth Books is a bibliophile's dream come true. If you have the time to dig through the piles of dusty tomes, this used-book store (one of three independently owned Commonwealth Books in Boston with its sister store in the basement of the Old South Meeting house) is a diamond in the rough. Each of the Commonwealth shops has its specialty—ranging from history to art to locally written gems. The store on Boylston has an excellent selection of coffee-table art and history books. The owner purchases out-of-print and antiquarian collections from Boston’s elite including retired professors and local authors.

Run by the Episcopal Diocese, this friendly bookstore carries a wide selection of books on spirituality. Although Cathedral Crossing focuses on Christianity, books on history, religious art, and global concerns will appeal to people of any faith. Religious music, cards, and jewelry available, as well as the more traditional Bibles, hymnals, and rosary beads.
