Formerly Twentieth Century Bowling Lanes, an establishment dating back before the 1950s. In more recent years, 20th Century became more known for its ice cream than its bowling. It's been upgraded and modernized a couple of times, and recently they have started to repaint the bowling lane area with some brighter, newer colors, but the lanes are still the same. They do not have a game room or pool tables, but they *DO* have bumper bowling for children. To understand the perfection of Ron’s brownie-nut ice cream, imagine dunking a brownie into a glass of ice-cold milk and then taking a bite. This place alone is worth the trip to Hyde Park.

In the winter- B&Js has "hot icecream" treats- such as Ice-Cream hot chocolate. When walking at night, don't let the life-sized Ben and Jerry scare you as they gaze onto Newbury Street. The Gelateria in Boston's North End is owned by Frank De Pasquale, who first started with Il Panino and also owns the more high-end Bricco and Mare. His gelato is made on site with a $30,000 Italian-made gelato machine. This is rich, dense, hardcore Italian gelato, and the place makes 50 flavors of gelato and sorbetto every day. The atmosphere is quite nouveau with a flatscreen TV and color-changing LED walls. Open until midnight every day. Bonus: gelato stuffed cannoli.

JP Licks is a Jamaica Plain institution. It has been in several locations, since it's founding in 1981, each time outgrowing where they were. Now it is located in the old firehouse and besides serving fantastic ice-cream, JP Licks roasts their own coffee and serves pastries throughout the day. Open from 6:00 am to midnight daily - this is a hub for the neighborhood. In the morning, folks are having coffee and reading the paper. On summer nights there is a line out the door as everyone comes over to get a cone.

You cannot go wrong if you choose a JP Licks ice cream cake for someone's birthday. No longer just in JP, there are locations throughout the city. But if you want to try the original this is the place to come.

Metropolis occupies what was once an ice cream parlor; today, there is no better place in Boston to spoon up cinnamon ice cream with chocolate bread pudding and caramel sauce ($8), one of the restaurant's rarefied desserts. While the ice cream here is exquisitely prepared, this trendy bistro focuses on innovative, Italian-influenced cuisine. Dishes such as the roasted duck with sun-dried plum, goat cheese, and smoked bacon tart ($20) exemplify how Metropolis' chef melds diverse and complex flavors with excellent results. The date-worthy atmosphere more than compensates for the lack of elbow room and the inevitable wait (call ahead). Entrees $15-20.

The pink, white, and black cow-like mosaic counter and larger-than-life cow murals let ice cream fans know they've entered frozen dairy paradise. Traditional classics include Sweet Cream, Cookie Dough, Chocolate Brownie, and Coffee Oreo, while unconventional specials include Myers Rum Raisin (with real liquor), Cucumber, and Pumpkin. The scope of chilly delights ranges from full-fat ice creams to health-conscious frozen yogurts (cones and dishes $2.20-4). The ever-expanding menu includes milkshakes and fruitata drinks ($3), as well as overflowing sundaes ($5-6) and absolutely mammoth banana splits ($6.70). If for some crazy reason ice cream isn't your thing, they also have an extensive drink menu of coffee, cappuccino, tea, and non-dairy freezes. J.P. Licks originated in Jamaica Plain, at 659 Centre St. (617-524-6740). Other branches at 4A College Ave. in Davis Sq. (617-666-5079), and Harvard St. in Coolidge Corner. All products guaranteed kosher.
