The Back Bay Fens are part of the string of parks called "the Emerald Necklace". Developed by Frederick Law Olmsted in the 1880s, who created this area from a rather disgusting area where effluence from industries on the Stony Brook and the Muddy River and sewer runoff from the City milled in a fetid swampland.
Now, the Fens offer many amenities to modern Bostonians - including a series of community garden plots (dating back to the "Victory" gardens of WWII) that range from serviceable vegetable producers to fanciful botanical wonderlands. This Boston playground is located in the neighborhood of Mission Hill, atop Parker Hill- The Parker Hill Playground has amazing panoramic views of the city of Boston. The play structures include slides, swings, climbing structures, and even (during the warmer weather, mind you), huge pipes that squirt water on kids who are daring enough to get wet! This playground is perfect for both the young as well as young at heart. Whether sitting on the benches while taking in the view, or climbing high atop the play structures, this park is so magical you feel as if you have been transported to a fantastical wonderland. There are many benches available, and even picnic tables, complete with painted checkerboards. What a great place to come with the kids during the day, a family weekend picnic, or for a minute of peace during hectic city life.

The fountain is open to children in the summer, but water shoes are required.

With a well-attended tennis camp during the day and Pop Warner football practices nearly every evening, the park is almost always full of children. Trash can sometimes be a problem. Plastic cups and bottles, straws, and snack wrappers were scattered across the grass. But the park is well-lighted at night, and the water fountain and bubbler work. Some users complained about the lack of restrooms.
