Bowdoin Square is a neighborhood nestled between the West End, Beacon Hill, and Government Center. It was home to the historic Bowdoin Square Theater which had a resident troupe in the early 1900s that performed both sophisticated European drama as well as melodrama and comedy. In 1893 boxing matches were held here, and in Dec. 1893, Jack Dempsey fought two exhibition fights. The theater closed on Friday, May 27, 1955. Charles Bulfinch was born in Bowdoin Square, and no doubt his commissions were influenced by his knowledge of the area. He was an early American architect, and has been regarded by many as the first native-born American to practice architecture as a profession.
