Broadway Bridge
The Broadway Bridge, which crosses Fort Point Channel, is the main link that between the peninsula known as "Southie" and the rest of the city of Boston. Work on bridge begun in 1870; bridge opened for public travel in March or April, 1871; colloquially called St. Patrick's Bridge. The first version of the Broadway Bridge was completed in 1871, but the cast iron beams failed within a few years. A replacement was completed in 1875. The superstructure that stood until recently dated to 1915 and was originally designed to carry streetcar lines as well as vehicular traffic. This span of road not only carried traffic over the channel, but also over the railroad lines carrying trains to South Station.
An open space area has been incorporated immediately north of Broadway Bridge linking Frontage Road to the Fort Point Channel area.
