CITGO holds an especially important place in Boston. The illuminated sign in Kenmore Square has become a landmark on the Boston skyline. It graces left field at Fenway Park and has seen thousands of athletes to the finish line at the Boston Marathon. It also serves as an excellent orientation point when people are lost in the city. Photographs of the sign appear on postcards, in newspapers, movies, books, tourism brochures and even in Life magazine. Citgo even has a page about it on their website. Kept in great shape by Marty Foley, it's been called the 'crown jewel of Boston' . It was originally built over a Cities Service divisional office in 1940, and now sits atop the Boston University Bookstore at 660 Beacon street. It used to be made up of 5,878 glass tubes of neon (5 miles), but was renovated in 2005 with easier to maintain LED tubes. It illuminates the Boston skyline from dusk until midnight. Marathon Tip: Don't focus on the sign as you're running to the finish line, because it's so prominent that you'll never feel as though you're getting close to it.
