Pour House is refreshingly reasonable, friendly, and free of ostentation. If you're seeking a place to be rowdy with other college kids, look no further than its brick walls and dark-wood booths. Food is the usual pub grub (huge hamburgers and club sandwiches), except cheaper. Th features half-priced Mexican entrees and Sa half-priced burgers. With 2 levels of eclectic and fun music and cheap bottled beer (from $3), there really isn't anywhere more congenial for a casual barfly night in the Back Bay. McGreevy's, a sportsbar and Irish restaurant and pub situated on the top of Boylston Street in the Back Bay and a stone's throw from Fenway, is reopened for the first time since it closed for Prohibition in the 1920's. Originally opened in 1894 by Michael 'Nuf Ced' McGreevy who was the bartender and leader of the Royal Rooters, the famed fanatical fans of the Boston Americans (who later would be renamed the Boston Red Sox), it was a sports bar that hosted the likes of Ty Cobb, local Boston politicos and celebrities. Open again by the Dropkick Murphy's Ken Casey, this reinstituted institution wants to bring a piece of history back to the city, and good times all around.

On the corner of Boylston and Gloucester Whiskey's is the all-American sports bar. The bartenders are all tall, thin, and scantily dresssed in short shorts and tight tops. The menu features your typical bar food, along with 25 cent wings on the weekdays. The bar is full both weekday and weekends with post-college kids. The TVs feature music videos and when applicable- sports games. Enjoy 10-cent wings at the bar, Sundays through Thursdays from 4pm to 11pm. Yep, 10 wings for $1. Selected appetizers cost $2.50 on weekdays from 4pm to 6pm. Ladies enjoy free appetizers on Sunday nights from 7pm to 11pm.

Though housed in a converted Boston police department, the sleek dark wood and polished surfaces of Dillon's bear little relation to its grittier past. An older crowd that can afford the steeper prices sips premium liquors or samples generic American fare like cobb salad or prime rib (entrees $14-22). There is a private outside area with seating where smoking is allowed. The quieter atmosphere and its location make Dillon's a possible choice for post- or mid- Newbury spree refueling. At this bar “with an attitude,” you'll meet an unabashedly loud, obnoxious, and crude crowd (“All in good fun!”). Dick's sports a Southern feel, but don't come for the hospitality; the staff takes pleasure in harassing patrons, and it says something about the patrons that they keep coming back. Not the best place to go if you have taste, or if you like a decently-priced pint, though food is reasonable and served in quantity. 52 foreign and domestic beers, with 8 on draft ($6-7.50, refills $4.50). Live music provided by the house band most nights. No cover. By its own admission the “Shame O' the Back Bay,” Dick's prides itself on buckets o' grub, no bull, and a waitstaff that acts like, well, dicks. Check your dignity at the door and prepare to pay for the worst service you'll ever find as you devour a hearty selection of good, greasy food (think ribs, steak, chicken, and seafood) amidst the filth of thrown napkins and food fight residue. When your mouth isn't full, sing along with the great music selection or giggle as your fellow patrons get humiliated. Grab a drink from the long bar to dull the ego blows, or retreat to the campy bathroom, complete with naughty goodie dispensers. A great place for birthdays or other group events, Dick's will force members of the party to wear giant paper hats scribbled with insults (“I sleep with my mother”; “Hung like a gerbil”), among other exercises in humility. Small (33 rooms) and fashionable hotel in near Copley Square, Charlesmark is a great tourist location on off the beaten path when it comes to the corporate hotelling industry. The lounge, a modern bar serving up martinis and specialty drinks, is a hot-spot for Bostonians and hotel guest alike.

The Foggy Goggle is now closed and has reopened to be McGreevy's Pub and Grille Foggy Goggle Pub is set on the "bar" strip of Boylston Street (Near Pour House, Lir, and Cactus Club). This is probably the place where you go when the lines are too long at other places. It's still a fun bar, and has all the essentials (beer, service, drinks, beer, drinks..) but lacks in atmosphere and people. Give it a shot and prove wrong- but don't say we didn't warn you.

UPDATE: Domani has officially closed and will be replaced with the stylish hipster hangout Minibar in December 2008. Located in the heart of Boston's Back Bay. Domani Bar & Trattoria offers an approachable "New Italian" menu reminiscent of those found today in hot-spot neighborhood restaurants throughout Italy.
