At this site on March 5, 1770, in front of the Old State House, tensions between the colonists and British soldiers erupted into violence. According to the British, this wasn't so much a massacre as perhaps a skirmish of sorts. It all began with a wigmaker's apprentice, who got into it with a British sentry, then all heck broke loose. British reinforcements were called in, only to be met with an angry crowd of colonists who hurled snowballs, insults, rocks, clubs, and whatever else they could get their hands on. The British ended up firing their muskets, and five civilians died. One of the sites on the Boston Freedom Trail.
