The creation of the New England Ophthalmologist Society was first proposed on May 1, 1884 by Hasket Derby, Benjamin Joy Jeffries, and Oliver Fairfield Wadsworth, all ophthalmologists of Boston. They proposed to organize an ophthalmological society similar to one that had been successful in New York City for 20 years.
The object of this Association shall be the study and advancement of ophthalmology.
