Make an Edit


Each listing, or page, has a primary content area that contains fact-based information about the business or location. It reflects the collaborative knowledge of the community and information that others might find useful. This area is wiki-based, which simply means that we allow visitors to collaboratively create and edit its content. Anyone can edit listings in Povo, whether or not they’re registered members or signed in. However, if you’re not registered, any edits you make will list your IP address, rather than your user name.

People choose to edit listings for a number of reasons. These include:

  • Updating it with more current information
  • Correcting errors and omissions
  • Re-writing it to improve clarity
  • Adding photos that bring the listing to life
  • Expanding it to reflect additional information


The Edit Process


To edit, update or add information or images to a listing, here’s what to do:

F#ind the listing page you’d like to edit

  1. Click on the “change” button at the top of the listing
  2. Use the wiki editor to make the changes or add new information
  3. Preview your changes by clicking on the “preview” button
  4. Click on the “save” button to save your changes

While editing, a toolbar at the top of the text box will provide you with an easy way to underline, bold, or italicize text. The “preview” button will show you what the wikitext will look like as content, but your edits won’t be saved and the copy won’t be changed until you click on the “save page” button at the bottom. Formatting problems are easier to see from the “preview” page than from the raw wikitext. You can make changes and preview the page as many times as necessary.

Don’t worry, you can always cancel what you’ve done if you make a mistake or change your mind. If its wrong, either go in and correct it or revert back to a previous version.


Minor vs. Major Edits


Users have the option of identifying any edit as a "minor edit". Checking the “minor edit” box implies that only superficial differences exist between the current and previous version: spelling corrections, formatting or layout changes, adding links, fixing obvious factual errors, or grammatically rearranging the text without impacting content. By identifying an edit as a “minor edit”, you believe there is no change to the meaning and the edit doesn’t need to be reviewed by anyway else tracking the page. On the other hand, a major edit to content or meaning should be reviewed to confirm that all those interested in the page content are aware of the change. Therefore, any change that affects the meaning of an article is not minor.
