Club Monaco, a subsidiary of Ralph Lauren, has stores throughout the country as well as internationally. Their style was created by the classic black and white staples on which they built their brand as well as a bevy of accessories and colorful sweaters and monthly "must haves" for both men and women. Club Monaco's presence in Boston is felt not only in the Prudential Center, but also Cambridgeside Galleria, and the Natick Collection.

Flair is one of the best bridesmaid shops around. Although this store might be smaller as it is housed in a Back Bay brownstone, it is the only carrier of Jenny Yoo in the city. A great find for any bride as it has a gamut of gowns with designer labels, as well as dresses that vary from formal to casual and fun. Located towards the top of Newbury Street in the ground floor. This bridal boutique only carries the finest of lines, from Vera Wang to Badgley Mischka bridal, to Amsale. Nina, their sales associate is quite helpful.

Lilly Pulitzer speaks for itself. Need whale pants? No problem. Lobsters on a mini skirt? We got it. Devotees to the Lilly brand have had her pastel passion for years. Step into In the Pink on Newbury Street and you are accosted (in the best sense of the word, of course) by the bright colors and crazy patterns. From Palm Beach to nearby Nantucket, Lilly has been swaddling chic and preppy women since the 1960's. The perfect place to shop for that just introduced resort wear before you head out for your cruise, to fun patterns to don on the golf course or tennis court. Lilly has it all.

Louis is the hippest, most fashion-savvy, cooler than cool store Boston has to offer. Too bad everything is so expensive—Manhattan styles come with 5th Avenue prices. Explore the Dries Van Noten or Helmut Lang men's line on the first floor, or salivate over the latest Prada and Jimmy Choo women's shoes on the top level. Louis has something for everyone (with a sky-high credit limit). An in-house electronica DJ, a café for weary shoppers (converts to an appropriately posh restaurant 5:30-10pm), a salon, ladies' wear on the top floor, suits on the middle, urban chic on the ground...you won't believe this used to be a natural history museum. A treasure in the Back Bay: Upper crust thrift store. Find designer jeans, scarves, and funky shirts with a high fashion label. The prices tags are reasonable if you don't mind being sloppy seconds. Happy Hunting!

A wonderful children's boutique. The products themselves are higher end, (pricier) but there is no noticeable markup to comparable products on the web. They let kids come in and play a bunch too, which we appreciate and definitely helps you learn what to purchase. They also have a weekly storytime. Brands: Plan, 7am, Zutano, etc.

Although the store is hardly crowded, its a head scratcher to why there is the beefed up security at Intermix. There is a always a security guard at the door to keep an eye on the inventory. To it's defense, Intermix does have pricey uber-trendsetting clothing.

Tunes run the gamut — CDs, vinyl, and digital formats — for electronic-music lovers, and LAB carries urban vinyl toys by Hong Kong’s Toy2R and Germany’s Rockaway Bear, plus apparel from labels like To Die For, Dissizit!, Hellz Bellz, and the store’s own limited-edition line, Limited Apparel Brand. As for the space itself, LAB looks more science class than showroom. Its all-white interior and stainless-steel furniture — on wheels to make room for in-store art shows and music performances — make the room the perfect blank slate on which to showcase LAB’s imaginative inventory.

Recently relocated from its small Newbury Street location to the Prudential Center, this Best of Boston winner sells designer-worthy clothing. The location is larger than the original Newbury Street location and carries all that you need to be dressed to the nines. It's hipster fashion ... with an edge. Owner Betty Riaz supports local designers like Stephanie Doucette, a UMASS grad and former bartender at the rock club Paradise, who recently launched a spring line of dresses and jackets under the Doucette Duvall moniker.

Beacon Hill parents rejoice at this clothier that caters to Johnny and Suzy Jr. Not only chock full of gorgeous clothes for all seasons, reasons, and levels of style, this store offers fabulous children's books and toys to keep all the tikes coming back for more. Stroller and baby friendly, the crew at the Red Wagon makes everyone feel welcome. Beware: your credit card might get a good workout here.

A Boston boutique shop that is dedicated to men. High quality and fashionable clothing from Penguin, Modern Amusement, and others. Friendly staff.

Housed in a beautiful old brownstone on Newbury Street in the Back Bay Vera Wang has the market cornered on all things bridal. From fantastic and expensive wedding gowns to a variety of bridesmaid dresses, Vera Wang offers a variety of bridal products in her exclusive boutiques. Although in recent years her empire has expanded to everything from stationary to perfume to linens, she still is known mainly for her lavish and expertly crafted wedding gowns.

Boomerangs is the re-sale store run by the AIDS Action Committee. You can find clothing, furniture, home goods, CDS, movies, and lots of other stuff all gently used and available "new to you." The stock changes all the time, so you need to stop in often. The store windows on Centre Street change often too - and are really public art pieces more than retail tools. They cleverly feature items on sale but in unusual tableaus. Proceeds from the store support the work of the AIDS Action Committee.

You can make donations of goods around at the back of the store - but please only during the set hours (otherwise you are subject to a fine for illegal dumping). Donations are also taken at the Boomerangs Donation Center at the Brewery Complex. And they will come and pick-up furniture -- call to discuss details.

TIPS FOR THE BOOMERANGS NOVICE:

To find the truly fabulous deals, you need to scour the racks on a regular basis (at least once a week).
Boomerangs staffers showcase seasonal goods--ranging from Halloween trinkets to Christmas snow globes--located at a table in the front of the store.
The die-hard Boomerangs junkie knows that the shop also has brand-new clothing from top-tier shops like Brooks Brothers and Filene's Basement. The only catch? Staffers mark the collar with a black marker to prevent returns to the original location.
Common brands found at Boomerangs include Banana Republic, Kenneth Cole and even Armani.
Boomerangs has a strict "no returns" policy. So, don't even try.
The store offers daily specials on clothing marked with a color-coded tag. So, if a specific shirt you like has a red tag, wait until it's "red tag day" to get additional savings.
The staff is generally very knowledgeable so if you're looking for a hidden gem buried within the racks of clothing, they're always willing to help out.
Centre Street regulars have come to expect funny, usually elaborate, window displays (their recent "Circus Freaks" sideshow-themed window, for example, is stunning) that creatively uses goods found within the store.

Vintage tattoo wear on Newbury Street? You bet.

Officially opening in December 2008, this chain sells both clothing and accessories inspired by tattoo artist Don Ed Hardy, the grandfather of the modern tattoo. The Newbury Street store highlights 2,000 sq. ft. of Ed Hardy designs and boasts a Coney Island-esque rock 'n' roll aesthetic.

Spearheaded by lifestyle designer Christian Audigier, an innovator who first won over celebs with his Von Dutch brand back in 2004, the new Ed Hardy boutique in Boston promises to jolt Newbury Street into submission with its colorful designs and edgy atmospherics.

Oh, and the LA-style clothes and sunglasses are killer as well.

March 30th, 2009: Crush Boutique has recently launched an on-line store for their merchandise on their website.

Chic but casual crowd. The boutique in front sets the tone for a very upscale, but relaxed place. Offering cute and trendy jeans, shoes, and fun frocks during the day, and a lounge with tasty small plates, Wii, and guitar hero in the back. The execution of the idea is a little off since the TV's are high up near the ceiling, and you have to constantly look upwards to play the Wii, but it really is an awesome touch that gives the place a soft touch. Clothes and cocktails? What more could you ask for? Overall, this is just the type of place that Boston needs...and what better place for such a creative concept than Fort Point Channel.

The restaurant serves a playful, whimsical side in its menu crafted by chef Michael Leviton, who gets his highbrow on at Lumiere. SOme of his noteworthy concoctions include pretzel dogs with a touch of fanciful panache and lobster with handmade gnocchi.

If you meander down Clearway, off of Massachusetts Avenue, you'll spot a slightly dingy looking bodega, or market. The windows are full of Tide and bleach and bottles of soda and juice, and when you peek inside, there are more mixed grocery items lining some wooden shelves. There might be a group of men eating take-out lunch on a picnic table, and there's a slightly suspect looking cash register in the back of the tiny space. In the back on the right, there's a soda vending machine. You want to quench your thirst. So you walk up to the machine....

And it slides to the left, revealing a streetwear store invisible from the road??

Bodega is a hidden gem of the Massachusetts Avenue area near Newbury. Started up a few years ago, as a sort of secret or insiders-only concept, the store is now usually packed, and visitors coming in might ruin the secret-entrance surprise for those just walking in the door. The space has high ceilings, a chandelier that the owner took from his mother's house back when they were first opening, and dark wood shelving built into the wall.

Wares include colorful, high-end sneakers from various brands, graphic t-shirts and sweatshirts, a crazy range of baseball caps, jewelry, sunglasses, and a collection of some of the coolest little publications--photos of shoes, graphic design, art, etc. The staff are extremely helpful, really excited about sneakers, and fun to sit around and chat with. The crowd in Bodega can be students, tourists, streetwear enthusiasts, those who heard through word of mouth--Bodega is one of the most unique little spots in Boston right now.

Ben Sherman, the ultimate British mod brand famous for its Oxford button-down shirts and Carnaby-style fit, invades Newbury Street in late 2008. The brand of choice for five decades of rock royalty ranging from the The Kinks and The Beatles in the '60s to The Clash in the '70s to the Arctic Monkeys and The Killers today, the Ben Sherman style is revered by stylistas for its focus on tailored classics which includes suits, shirts and shoes.

UPDATE: A few months after this local music store opened, it closed its doors. The space at 668 Centre Street is now for rent.

Mud Dog Media Company, a new music store in Jamaica Plain, opened in April 2008 at the former CD Spins storefront at 668 Centre St. Mud Dog is a regional chain based in Wakefield, MA. In addition to music, the store will sell clothing and feature a full skateboarding supply shop.

The Hempest is a clothing store featuring natural organic style clothing- mainly from the plant by-product hemp. For the record, please don't light your clothing on fire- it doesn't work. They also carry baby clothes by Boston based One Acorn.

Recently opened in early June 2008, the funky jeans made popular by Fergie's "My Hump" song are now on their way to Newbury. The jeans are characterized by the distinctive back-pockets (most designer jean buffs know jeans by the design on the back pocket) and the outter seam twisting forward to the front of the pant. The jeans flatter most figures- letting you have curves in all the right places. The jeans will cost you a heafty $150 and up. Apart from the well known jeans, the store will carry men, women and children's clothing lines, sportswear, headware, and handbags.

No stranger to controversy, Urban Outfitters has transformed its image from retro to vintage to kitschy since owner Richard Hayne first opened its “The Free People’s Store” in Philadelphia in 1970. While the Newbury Street and Harvard Square stores have ruled the hipster roost in Boston for years, the Faneuil Hall location is known for its cool, labyrinth-like layout and collection of home-goods items the other stores don’t have. Out of the three Boston-area locations, this shop is a bit more cramped and is more “tourist friendly” than the other two.

Urban Outfitters offer rad college-type clothing, furniture, accessories, board games, lighting, shoes... you get the picture. The offerings tend to be "thrift-store" expensive. They offer some great books (both read-able and coffee table-sque)- and novelty items. The store targets college age kids, but you need trust funds to buy more than one pair of jeans/mickey mouse shirt.

Visit your grandma's attic before heading to buy clothing (skipping the price for the same look). Also, check out the sale selection.

Billed as a family thrift store, the cramped Urban Renewals in Allston organizes its piles of children's clothing, men's sports jackets and women's apparel by color. If you have the time to sift through the heaps of second-hand clothes, books and home goods, you’ll eventually stumble on a diamond in a rough. Happy hunting!

Winmil Fabrics located in Downtown Crossing seems to have it all. Great selection, low prices and the best help. The sales people know what they are talking about and are there to help. They have a large selection of patterns to choose from as well as a huge clearance section and reasonable prices.

A quaint (aka small and way cute) boutique selling women's clothing, accessories, and other fine items to have you looking fabulous. This shop on Charles Street in Beacon Hill gives Newbury Street a run for its money when it comes to cute clothing. Although expensive, this boutique carries brands such as Milly, Nanette Lepore, and Eli Tahari to name a few. Wish has been draping preppy Beacon Hill women for over 5 years and they have no plan to stop anytime soon.

This is a one-stop shop for cute pregnancy clothing for the expecting. Expect a high price with your expanding tummy, but if fashion is your thing- this keeps you on top of the game. Baby gear is also part of the merchandise.

Brooks Brothers is perhaps not the most cutting-edge or the best bargain, but it still does what it does best: preppiness incarnate. One very useful feature of this high-end (mostly) men's couturier is a wide selection of often neglected sizes, such as extra-long and -short sizes. Suits start at $420, and most dress shirts are $60-120 (though you can get 3 classic polos for under $175). An ample tie selection ($45-100) on the first floor generously lets a second (cheaper) tie go at 30% off. Also at 75 State St. (617-261-9990). Buried Treasures is a small culture shop near Hemenway St. and Boylston St. It is nestled in a side street and is full of Grateful Dead & Reggae merchandise, stickers, tie die, cards, gifts, jewelry, posters, clothing, incense, and tobacco products. You can go into the back room and look at pricy bowls and entry level water pipes. They sell vaporizers.

The people that work there are hyper paranoid and unfriendly... but hey, if you need a glass screen - there it is.

It is open Monday - Saturday 12pm - 8pm, and Sunday from 1pm - 6pm. They accept all major credit cards.

Friendly salespeople and overpriced clothing. Certainly you'll find some very trendy items here, but you'll be paying Saks prices.

A stylish, expensive, and classic boutique on Newbury stock full of the "essentials" of a fabulous woman's wardrobe. According to the Boston Business Journal, the legendary mark-down retailer will occupy its original yet renovated three basement floors in Downtown Crossing starting spring 2009, and will rent two stories in the new Filene's building - in addition to the actual basement. They're doing a pretty good job with the demolition right now. I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Guess offers slightly trashy and somewhat overpriced takes on European styles. Tube tops and little black dresses abound ($25-200), along with trendy shoes, hand bags, sunglasses, and jewelry. Guess's men's collection, with its abundance of fitted v-necks and black pleather pants, may seem a bit out of place in puritan Boston, but is great for the pastel-loving metrosexual. The name makes it sound like some skinny witch club on Newbury Street, but I guarantee that anyone can walk in off the street and love this place. That includes men and pets. The woman who owns it, Debra Mattaliane, is very friendly and will give you tons of recommendations.

The SOWA Open Market, an open-air venue for artists, craftsmen, collectioners, farmstands and other vendors makes its seasonal debut each year in May. It opens in tandem with the SoWa Art Walk. Bargain basement shopping at its best. What makes the TJ Maxx location in Downtown Crossing particularly special is its stellar selection of home goods and bedding. Great selection of sheets and comforters and they’re definitely the go-to place for college students looking to spruce up their dorm rooms. The clothing selection is hit or miss and it takes tenacity and repeat visits to snag that perfect designer outfit or shirt for cheap.

This is a great place to go if you have a wedding or special event to go to, and need just the right outfit that will make every other woman there extremely jealous. The satin and silk dresses are absolutely stunning in a rainbow of color, so beautiful that you'll consider going without food for weeks so that you can afford to buy them. You'll see a lot of Nicole Miller, Betsey Johnson, Poleci on the racks. Plunging necklines, gold, sequin, swank, heaven, fabulousness. Bonus: black chandeliers over antique looking wallpaper and heavy purple curtains that drape the dressing room.

To celebrate the grand opening of their brand new Newbury Comics location at Faneuil Hall, the new shop on the block hosted, well, the New Kids On The Block (yes, the '80s pop icons from Boston) at this swank record and retail location.

For those not in the know, Newbury Comics is an independently owned retailer specializing in music, movies and pop culture goods. Their experience comes from over 30 years of alternative retailing through their now 28 New England-based store locations.

The Faneuil Hall shop boasts two floors with some of the familiar indie goods that made their growing brand a fave among the collegiate crowd including a "Wicked Cheap" rack of CDs, a chalkboard highlighting upcoming releases as well as an emphasis on local/regional bands.

In addition to the usual pop culture goods, this tourist friendly location has a larger selection of edgy clothing like their alterna-Ts and a second-floor space carrying a bevy of Levi jeans.

Replacing Armani Cafe, Zara is a women's and men's fashion store that officially opened its doors in March 2008. Specializing in European-style clothing and footwear, the new Zara store on Newbury Street is basically an upscale H&M. Famous for its flagship stores in Montreal, Italy and NYC (see the YouTube video below for more info), the Back Bay store has three levels (two floors dedicated to women's clothing, one for men with a stylish kids section on the second floor).

After over 50 years in Europe, H&M has joined meatballs and bikini teams as the only worthwhile Swedish exports to America. The downtown store brings Bostonians the hottest euro-chic styles (and mind-numbingly long lines), with clothing for men, women and kids. H&M is high fashion at shockingly low prices; while you won't be able to expect the style or quality of any garment to last you more than a couple of seasons, at $15 for a dress and $2 for three pairs of earrings, you can't really go wrong. H&M also consistently updates its newest fashions. Always busy, it's fun to poke in. If this Downtown Crossing location does not work for you, you can also visit H&M at Cambridgeside Galleria or the couture H&M on Newbury Street. It should not be missed for the stylish hungry who don't have a huge bankroll to spend on clothes. The Newbury location is opened M-SA from 10:00 AM - 9:30 PM, Sunday 11:00 AM - 7:00 PM.

One of the few maternity stores in Boston. A teensy amount of nursing items as well. This string of stores focuses on Low end designer maternity wear, mostly in the $100-$300 range. Clothes range from casual and funky to business attire. A very samll lingerie and hose section as well. Tiny, constant sale section. Dressing rooms and a few toys for young children who accompany shoppers. One distasteful thing- They also try lots of "tie ons" at the register, magazine subrscriptions, buyers clubs etc.

Trendy little clothing shop to make your ultimate townie fashion statement. Tight, hip-hugging jeans, bling, and jackets with faux fur accents are a must for any East Boston beauty. You can find some truly amazing things here for dirt cheap. Everything is imported from Turkey, so you can be sure that what you find is both sexy and interesting.

This clothing store for juniors and young men caters to value-seeking fashion conscious consumers. In other words, Tello’s is known for its cheap clothing and flashy outfits perfect to wear at the club. This Downtown Crossing shop also boasts brand-name imposter brands that mimic Bebe, Hollister and Abercrombie clothing. While the garments look stylish, don’t count on quality. In fact, some regulars say Tello’s ghetto gear tears apart after a few washings.

This Downtown Crossing retail shop specializes in trendy clothes for the fashion-conscious teen similar to the ill-fated Contempo Casuals. While they try their best to stay ahead of the fashion curve, Wet Seal is a bit of a throwback to the ‘80s when “gag me with a spoon” mall chicks ruled the roost with their color-coded outfits, clunky jewelry and poofed-up hair. However, if you have time to sift through the stacks of cheaply made clothes to find that perfect outfit, Wet Seal is the place for you.

Formerly Gumshoe, 40 South Street has brought this older vintage shop a new coat of paint, better hours of operation, and more choices in clothing. Channeling a former era - about mid 20th century or so - you can find all sorts of clothing and accessories to compliment your inner Dean Martin, Doris Day or whichever 50s icon works for you.

Targeting the low- and moderate-income customer, this chain sells clothing, toys, housewares, shoes and other odds and ends. You'll find a lot of trendy and fashion items at up to 70% discount.

Remember Drakkar Noir cologne? It's what teen boys used to douse themselves with at teen dances. Drakkar does not gently insinuate masculinity; it's more like a strong testosterone-fueled punch in the face. Just when you think that it couldn't get much better than that, it's now been replaced by Abercrombie & Fitch's FIERCE. The product description states: [the] scent is an immediate attention getter and rightly so. A&F pump this scent throughout their retail space, which results in a FIERCE noxious cloud that hovers within 20 feet of the store's entrance.

Consingment store that is free to sell clothes to. Clothing has to be in good condition and come from a non-smoking household.

This store is okay for there jeans but hinestly was not impressed at all by the service or the clothes. The staff was nice and helpful but the lines for the register and the fitting rooms were way to long. This place has a line of clothes including tees, collar shirts, hoodies and pants all at very cheap prices. They frequently have sales so you can go buy alot and still have money for other things. If you like Abercrombie you would like AE as well. Great location and brand.
