Bohemian-cool meets French countryside chic in the girlie-girl paradise of Anthropologie. From floral dresses and exquisite jewelry to cheery housewares and vintage-style furniture, every item here is timeless and unique—a perfect place for gift-hunting. Intricate embroidery and bold prints add to the appeal. But quality comes at an (often steep) price (t-shirts $40+, toiletries $10-20, skirts $70-180, jewelry $38-180). Sales racks on the third floor offer more affordable items without sacrificing the Amelie-esque cuteness.

<div class="p"></div>Expertise without attitude? Yep, it's possible.
<div class="p"></div>Brookline Liquor Mart, a wine and spirits staple located at 1354 Commonwealth Ave. in <a href="http://allston.povo.com/">Allston</a>, is one of the larger stores of its kind. But, die-hard patrons have come to expect more than just an extraordinary range of products and services at BLM. For this emporium serving up stellar potent potables since 1934, it's all about service minus the snobbery.
<div class="p"></div>“I tend to look for the good things in any bottle of wine I try—the grape flavor, the color, the (real) value of the bottle," says Roger Ormon, BLM's wine manager. "I'm not just interested in fancy or expensive wines. I can get just as excited about a fantastic $15 bottle of wine as I can about the finest vintage from Bordeaux.”
<div class="p"></div>BLM is lauded for its convival Saturday wine tastings and expanded calendar of <a href="http://www.blmwine.com/main.asp?request=EVENTS" class="external text" title="http://www.blmwine.com/main.asp?request=EVENTS" rel="nofollow">wine-related events</a>, such as their upcoming "Celluloid and Wine" film series perfect for oenophiles. Also, BLM Wine + Spirits specializes in crafting wine cellars as well as offering appraisals on existing cellars.
<div class="p"></div>And, extending their "expertise without attitude" approach online, they've launched a new <a href="http://www.blmwine.com/" class="external text" title="http://www.blmwine.com/" rel="nofollow">internet sales department</a> perfect for that last-minute gift for a colleague or friend ... or even yourself.
<div class="p"></div>For store president Lisa Miller Ryan, it's been a life-long passion to maintain the family tradition of selling the best product and educating wine drinkers for more than half a century. In fact, her father Burton J. Miller is CEO and chairman.
<div class="p"></div>"I cut my teeth in the wine business," Ryan says. "I probably took my first steps down the aisle of the store.”
<div class="p"></div>Still not sure? Don't pop a cork. Let the knowledgeable team at BLM guide you with their "Vineyard Picks" e-newsletter <a href="https://www.blmwine.com/main.asp?request=NEWSLETTER&amp;" class="external text" title="https://www.blmwine.com/main.asp?request=NEWSLETTER&amp;" rel="nofollow">here</a>.

The shop’s claim to fame is its exotic and unusual flower arrangements. While the space is small, the quality that comes out of Chaba Florist is larger than life.

City Feed and Supply offers essential items that urban JP dwellers need just like the Feed and Supply stores do in rural areas. But instead of hay or sacks of cow food, City Feed and Supply has coffee, sandwiches, pastries, groceries, magazines, candles and toilet paper and many, many other things crammed into this little space on Boylston Street. Fair Trade coffee is to JP as --what?-- is to Podunk, Kansas.<br />
Soon City Feed and Supply plans to expand to Centre Street and offer essential materials to even more of JP.<br />

If you have the time to dig through the piles of dusty tomes, this used-book store (one of three independently owned Commonwealth Books in Boston with its sister store in the basement of the Old South Meeting house) is a diamond in the rough. From Palm Beach to nearby Nantucket, Lilly has been swaddling chic and preppy women since the 1960's. <div class="p"></div>Louis is the hippest, most fashion-savvy, cooler than cool store Boston has to offer. Too bad everything is so expensive—Manhattan styles come with 5th Avenue prices. Explore the Dries Van Noten or Helmut Lang men's line on the first floor, or salivate over the latest Prada and Jimmy Choo women's shoes on the top level. Louis has something for everyone (with a sky-high credit limit). An in-house electronica DJ, a café for weary shoppers (converts to an appropriately posh restaurant 5:30-10pm), a salon, ladies' wear on the top floor, suits on the middle, urban chic on the ground...you won't believe this used to be a natural history museum. If you're ready to spend, nothing says “I'm loaded and well-creased” like a custom-tailored suit made by one of the shop's expertly pretentious tailors. Those in the know mark their calendars way in advance for Louis's huge clearance in Jan. and June.

It also features vintage furnishings and accessories such as a Jean-Michel Frank Parchment Desk and numerous other vintage pieces such as a chrome tubular arm chair in black leather. When visiting, it's best to ask lots of questions because the options are numerous. It is open to retail and the trade. Room planning services are also available. Prices are a little lower than several of the top tier luxury furnishings stores. Visit D SCALE's blog for furniture sales and news items of interest. In the September 2008 issue of Architectural Digest the vintage Poltrona chairs were featured, available only at D SCALE.

"Nowadays, we may think a sofa is only a sofa. But in the hands of the right designer, a sofa can become an object that speaks of wholeness, of the feminine, of infinity - and it can be made-to measure. This is the work of Dennis Duffy at his showroom south of Boston's Washington Street, DSCALE. ... His work incorporates what might be called the "softer side" of Modernism." In the last 50 years, this family store has expanded into an establishment that offers the largest selection of fine writing utensils in New England. The vast array of pens includes imported Auroras, Mont Blancs, Parkers, Bics, and rare antique models. Prices range from $2 for a Stanford Uniball to $2200 for the Kron “Space in Time” model, which seems ridiculous, but let's face it: if you're paying $2200 for a pen, you probably have also already bought your own seat on the shuttle and really do need one that functions in zero gravity. Used pens bought and sold. Fountain pen repair services available.

As such, it's also one of the strictest stores around. Huntington Wine and Spirits won't accept out of state licenses without credible photo backup. If you only have an out of state identification card (not a license), be prepared to produce your passport instead.
<div class="p"></div>The selection is pretty decent: beer--cans, bottles, a decent range of good beer, plenty of wine--one or two fridges chilling champagne, whites, and roses, and the majority of liquor behind the counter.
<div class="p"></div>They also carry most mixers, and have container of limes and nips on the counter. There's sure to be a line on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, as well as before any major sports games.
<div class="p"></div>The store is a redemption center for bottles and cans, and also offers delivery services with a simple phone call. Additionally, they will buy back unused products--if you're throwing a huge party, you can buy more than enough with no fear of being stuck with all the extra. Corporate accounts are also available. The store has occasional wine, beer, and liquor tastings as well!
Now open Sundays from 12-8.

Glass-paneled walls, high angular ceilings, and pseudo-marble floors might make you think you're inside some sort of futuristic Apley Court. “The Pru” has the essentials (except a music store) for the binging shopaholic: restaurants, an expansive food court, and the traditional fashion staples. Also crowding the wide and spotless corridors of the mall are more than 20 novelty carts offering everything from Elvis ties to Mickey Mouse socks—basically nothing you'd actually want to buy—plus 12 free Internet kiosks. The Pru also features the most accessible <a href="http://boston.povo.com/Cheesecake_Factory_at_Prudential_Center">Cheesecake Factory at Prudential Center</a>, another <a href="http://boston.povo.com/Legal_Seafoods" class="new">Legal Seafoods</a>, and <a href="http://boston.povo.com/Top_of_the_Hub">Top of the Hub</a>.

Kerri Platt is the owner of this shop, in which you will find six or seven thousand bottles of wine. The wine runs a wide range of price, from $7 to hundreds of dollars. The philosophy is that there are very good wines that are inexpensive, and they seek out excellent deals as well as hard-to-find vintages. This is the kind of place where you can walk in and say that you're not ready to purchase anything, but had some questions. They'll take the time to answer anything, as the staff are extremely knowledgeable. With this kind of focus on quality and education, you will want to come back time after time and quit wasting your money on bottles of wine that don't make the grade. Bonus: free wine tastings every Friday from 5pm to 8pm.

Boomerangs is the re-sale store run by the AIDS Action Committee. You can find clothing, furniture, home goods, CDS, movies, and lots of other stuff all gently used and available "new to you." The stock changes all the time, so you need to stop in often. The store windows on Centre Street change often too - and are really public art pieces more than retail tools. They cleverly feature items on sale but in unusual tableaus. Proceeds from the store support the work of the AIDS Action Committee.
<div class="p"></div>You can make donations of goods around at the back of the store - but please only during the set hours (otherwise you are subject to a fine for illegal dumping). Donations are also taken at the <a href="http://jamaicaplain.povo.com/Boomerangs_Donation_Center">Boomerangs Donation Center</a> at the <a href="http://jamaicaplain.povo.com/?search&amp;query=Brewery+Complex&amp;radius=">Brewery Complex</a>. And they will come and pick-up furniture -- call to discuss details.

<b>TIPS FOR THE BOOMERANGS NOVICE:</b>

<ul><li>To find the truly fabulous deals, you need to scour the racks on a regular basis (at least once a week).
</li><li>Boomerangs staffers showcase seasonal goods--ranging from Halloween trinkets to Christmas snow globes--located at a table in the front of the store.
</li><li>The die-hard Boomerangs junkie knows that the shop also has brand-new clothing from top-tier shops like <a href="http://boston.povo.com/Brooks_Brothers">Brooks Brothers</a> and <a href="http://boston.povo.com/Filene%27s_Basement_%28Washington_Street%29">Filene's Basement</a>. The only catch? Staffers mark the collar with a black marker to prevent returns to the original location.
</li><li>Common brands found at Boomerangs include <a href="http://boston.povo.com/Banana_Republic_%28Newbury_Street%29">Banana Republic</a>, <a href="http://boston.povo.com/Kenneth_Cole_%28Newbury_Street%29">Kenneth Cole</a> and even <a href="http://boston.povo.com/Giorgia_Armani" class="new">Armani</a>.
</li><li>Boomerangs has a strict "no returns" policy. So, don't even try.
</li><li>The store offers daily specials on clothing marked with a color-coded tag. So, if a specific shirt you like has a red tag, wait until it's "red tag day" to get additional savings.
</li><li>The staff is generally very knowledgeable so if you're looking for a hidden gem buried within the racks of clothing, they're always willing to help out.
</li><li>Centre Street regulars have come to expect funny, usually elaborate, window displays (their recent "Circus Freaks" sideshow-themed window, for example, is stunning) that creatively uses goods found within the store.
</li><li>Interested in purchasing items showcased in their elaborate window displays? Boomerangs now auctions of the goods in a raffle at the front desk.
</li><li>The staff's taste in music is impeccable--with indie-rock gems like Guided By Voice's "Bee Thousand" and Matador lo-fi classics like Yo La Tengo--seranading customers as they browse the racks.

Chic but casual crowd. The boutique in front sets the tone for a very upscale, but relaxed place. Offering cute and trendy jeans, shoes, and fun frocks during the day, and a lounge with tasty small plates, Wii, and guitar hero in the back. The execution of the idea is a little off since the TV's are high up near the ceiling, and you have to constantly look upwards to play the Wii, but it really is an awesome touch that gives the place a soft touch. Clothes and cocktails? What more could you ask for? Overall, this is just the type of place that Boston needs...and what better place for such a creative concept than <a href="http://boston.povo.com/Fort_Point_Channel">Fort Point Channel</a>.
<div class="p"></div>The restaurant serves a playful, whimsical side in its menu crafted by chef Michael Leviton, who gets his highbrow on at <a href="http://westnewton.ma.povo.com/Lumiere_Restaurant">Lumiere</a>. SOme of his noteworthy concoctions include pretzel dogs with a touch of fanciful panache and lobster with handmade gnocchi.
